Crowd2Map Tanzania is a crowdsourced mapping project aiming to put rural Tanzania on the map. Since 2015, we have been adding schools, hospitals, roads, buildings and villages to OpenStreetMap with the help of volunteers worldwide and on the ground in Tanzania.

Our most recent efforts have been focused on fighting female genital mutilation (FGM) in the Serengeti region, and this excellent video by AJ+ news will tell you why:

How does it work? We are mapping buildings, roads and villages on OpenStreetMap via the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) tasking manager. All of our tasks can be found here, and you can map or validate any of them!

The other part of our project focuses on gathering local knowledge: mappers on the ground use Maps.me app on smartphones or tablets, and printed fieldpapers to directly map their communities by adding points. Completed fieldpapers are emailed to online volunteers who input the data into OpenStreetMap and generate printable maps which they email back.
